I’ve been painting door hangers for over 8 years, and I have to say, if you’ve yet to try using a digital door hanger template…oh friend, you’re missing out!
While creating your door hanger designs from scratch can be a fun and challenging way to work on your painting skills, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel if you don’t have to. Especially if you’re new to making door hangers.
Digital templates allow you to easily transfer your design onto the wooden blank, and see some inspiration for painting and getting the details just right.
But did you know there are SO MANY other ways to use door hanger templates? It’s true! And I’ve compiled a list of my favorite ones here. Whether you’re a new or experienced crafter, you’ll be able to work through each one — and have a good time doing it!
Wait! READ THIS if you’ve never used a door hanger template before
If you’re not sure how to use a door hanger template, I’ve got you covered! They’re pretty simple and straightforward, and all you need is some printer paper and a printer, plus a few other small supplies, to make them work for you.
You can see a FULL, step-by-step, tutorial here!
If you’ve used a door hanger template before, go ahead and read on!
#1: Wooden Block Sign
Wooden block signs make the perfect craft for holidays, graduations, celebrations, and more! In fact, one of the first projects I did showing how to use a door hanger template was with one of these, and it’s still around in my Valentine’s Day decor today.
All you really need (aside from your favorite paints and brushes of course!) is a piece of scrap wood, ideally in a circle or square shape to fit the design.
Here’s an example of one:
#2: Tiered Tray Decor
One of my FAVORITE ways to get crafty is by creating tiered tray decor. Think of these like mini door hangers and signs. So fun!
Here’s an example of one:
You’ll need some small pieces of wood that can fit your designs (which you can find at places like Dollar Tree) and then you’re good to go. And for the actual tray, you can usually find them at Hobby Lobby, Walmart, or Target.
PRO TIP: Door hanger and wreath attachments make for great tiered tray decor!
#3: Acrylic Frame Decor
I just love this idea as a gift — it definitely changes things up. Plus, painting a door hanger template on an acrylic frame is WAY easier than painting an idea from scratch on canvas. If you mess up, just wait for your acrylic paint to dry and scrape it off!
Here’s an example of one:
#4: Canvas Paintings
Now if you’re looking for more of a challenge, this one’s for you! But I will say, it’s not as hard as you may think. If you’re nervous about messing up, try starting out with smaller canvas sizes and work your way up.
Plus, you can easily trace the template design onto the canvas with some graphite paper.
Here’s an example of one:
#5: Canvas Garden Flag
Don’t you just love those pretty garden flowers in the springtime? Or having cute Christmas-themed decor in your yard? A door hanger template traced onto a canvas garden flag can make it happen!
Just use the same approach as a canvas sign to get the final product.
Here’s an example of one:
#6: Coloring pages for kids
Door hanger templates can also be used for kid-friendly crafts! And coloring pages mean no mess, no fuss. Just print and grab your coloring tool of choice. You’ll have something fun to work on in minutes!
