Imagine this: you have a door hanger that you can leave up all year long, with seasonal additions you can swap out as a new holiday, celebration, or mood rolls around. Well, that’s what seasonal attachments can do for you, my friend!

They’re a game-changer when it comes to decorating your porch. No need to store tons of door hangers for every single holiday. With attachments, you just need one base sign and then the smaller attachment pieces to go with it.

In this post, I’m going to show you a few different ways to use these DIY door hanger attachments, and share some of my favorite resources, too. Let’s dig in!

DIY door hanger attachment idea #1: Use with a base

The most popular way to use attachment signs is on a door hanger base. Because these attachment pieces are much smaller than the door hanger itself (the ones in our shop are a six-inch size!), you just need a magnet to keep them intact.

I recommend a simple magnet and a magnetic disc with 3M adhesive. Those seem to hold the best and last the longest. You can find them in my Amazon shop!

DIY door hanger attachment idea #2: Porch leaners

Another great addition to your outdoor decor? Porch leaners! They’re a great way to welcome guests with a bold, seasonal statement.

A typical porch leaner is about four feet tall, 12 inches wide, and two inches thick. Most can be customized by adding letters and swapping out seasonal attachments.

For example, swapping out the “O” for a pumpkin attachment like you see below!

DIY door hanger attachment idea #3: Candlestick stands

What if you want attachment pieces for your indoor decor? A candlestick stand is the perfect solution! It can go nearly anywhere in your home and can fit all kinds of DIY door hanger attachment designs

Whether you place it on your dining table, corner table, or mantel, it adds the perfect amount of festivity! I recommend using an eight-inch attachment size for these.

And again — all you need to do to change your decor is detach the attachment and place a new one with our magnetic system! Easy peasy!

DIY Door Hanger Attachment Idea #4: Countdown Door Hanger

This is one of my favorite ways to use DIY door hanger attachments. Who doesn’t love counting down the days to their favorite event or holiday?

You can stand it up with a dowel rod or attach a string on the back to hang it on the wall. Then, you can paint the areas that will have text with chalk paint. That way, you can easily swap out the days and events for future use!

And the attachments are a fun addition to liven up your countdown timer! Use it for Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, or something else entirely (I’m counting down the days to our biggest in-person door hanger event, SA Live!).

Gluing the DIY Door Hanger Attachment

While we do have a countdown-timer-style door hanger template and blank in our shop, I started this one from scratch. All I did was paint the base white, add the chalkboard paint like I mentioned above, and glue on the magnet for the attachment.

You can glue your magnet to the wood block using E6000 industrial adhesive. Just place a metal disc on the back of each attachment (after you’ve glued on your magnet), and before placing it onto the board, line up the attachment in the center. Then stick it on!

You’ll also want to leave this countdown timer flat as it dries. Otherwise, your attachment will move downward because of gravity!
