There’s something special about pulling into your driveway and smiling before you even get out of the car.

Your front porch is one of the first things you see every day, and it’s also the first impression guests have of your home. But creating a beautiful summer front porch doesn’t have to mean a complete makeover or an expensive shopping trip.

In this video, I shared five simple ideas for refreshing your front porch for summer, and below, you’ll see a few extra tips and resources to help you create a space that feels welcoming and uniquely yours!

Summer Porch Tip #1: Start with One Piece You Love

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t try to decorate everything at once. Instead, choose one piece that makes you smile every time you see it.

For me, that’s almost always a hand-painted door hanger.

A statement door hanger becomes the focal point of your porch and naturally helps you decide what colors and accessories to add next. It’s also something your guests notice immediately.

One of my favorite things about creating hand-painted door hangers is knowing that no two are exactly alike. When you paint your own, you’re creating something that’s personal to your home instead of buying the same decor everyone else has!

If you’re building a seasonal porch, choose your favorite piece first, then let everything else coordinate around it instead of trying to match everything perfectly.

Summer Porch Tip #2: Coordinating Doesn’t Mean Matching

Instead of matching every piece exactly, look for colors that complement each other. For example, if your summer door hanger features bright pinks, turquoise, and yellows, your doormat, garden flag, planters, or porch pillows can simply pick up one or two of those colors.

That’s what creates a collected, intentional look without making your porch feel overly themed.

Mixing handmade pieces with store-bought accessories is a simple way to create a porch that feels both polished and personal.

Summer Porch Tip #3: Build a Porch You Can Update Every Season

One of the easiest ways to save money on seasonal decorating is to think long-term.

Instead of replacing every decoration four or five times a year, build a foundation that works year-round.

Then you can swap out a few seasonal accents like:

• Door hangers
• Garden flags
• Porch leaners
• Lantern fillers
• Seasonal florals

This “seasonal swap” approach keeps decorating fun while helping you get more life out of the pieces you already own!

Summer Porch Tip #4: Don’t Forget Your Front Door Color

Your porch decor will always look better when it works with your home’s existing colors. 

Take a look at:

• Your siding
• Shutters
• Brick or stone
• Trim color

Then decide whether your porch decor should create contrast or blend in.

For darker front doors, lighter summer colors usually stand out beautifully. If your home has more neutral colors, adding a colorful front door or bright seasonal decor can instantly make your entryway feel more inviting and intentional. 

Summer Porch Tip #5: Handmade Over Store-Bought

Now, I love shopping at Hobby Lobby as much as the next person, but there’s something extra special about displaying something you painted yourself. Whether it’s a porch leaner, a door hanger, or another handmade project, those pieces become conversation starters.

I’ve lost count of how many times someone has told me their neighbor asked where they bought their door hanger…and they got to proudly answer, “I made it!”

That feeling never gets old!
