The best part? You don’t need to know how to draw. We’re using a traceable template that makes this project beginner-friendly and so much fun. Just trace the design and start painting!

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a colorful “Hello Spring” truck garden flag ready to display in your yard or on your porch.

Supplies for Your Spring Truck Garden Flag

Here’s everything used in this project so you can easily follow along. You can find most of these items at your local craft store, or on my Amazon storefront

Surface and Template

Templates make this project beginner-friendly because you can trace the design instead of drawing it freehand!

Fabric Paint

soak into fabric without cracking or peeling.

Colors used:

  • Fuchsia (truck body)
  • Bright Yellow
  • Ocean Blue
  • Indian Turquoise
  • White
  • Black

Optional:

  • Regular craft paint for mixing colors
  • Fabric painting medium (to convert regular acrylic paint into fabric paint)

Paint Brushes

  • Large flat brush
  • Medium flat brush
  • Small round detail brush (size 3/0)

Helpful Extras

  • Egg carton, ice cube tray, or paint palette
  • Paper towels
  • A cup of water
  • Iron
  • Scotchgard spray for weather protection

Step #1: Prepare Your Garden Flag

Before you start painting, take a few minutes to prepare your fabric surface.

  1. Remove the garden flag from the package.
  2. Iron the flag to remove wrinkles.
  3. Lay it flat on your work surface.

A smooth surface helps your design transfer cleanly and makes painting much easier!

Step #2: Transfer the Spring Truck Design

One of the biggest reasons beginners struggle with painting is when the drawing portion gets intimidating. That’s why templates are such a game-changer!

Here’s how to transfer the design:

  1. Place graphite paper shiny side down on the fabric.
  2. Lay your printed template on top.
  3. Trace all the lines with a pencil.

Press firmly so the graphite transfers onto the fabric. When you remove the template, it should look like the design was lightly sketched onto the garden flag.

Step #3: Paint the Truck

Start by painting the main truck body. Using a large flat brush, fill in the truck with fuchsia fabric paint.

Keep in mind that fabric paint works a little differently than paint on wood:

  • It absorbs into the material
  • You may need to reload your brush more often
  • The paint spreads smoothly and evenly

Other than that, it’s usually pretty easy to use! Allow this area to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step #4: Mix and Paint the Truck Bumper

Next, we’ll paint the bumper. If you don’t have gray fabric paint, you can easily mix your own:

  1. Add white paint to your palette.
  2. Mix in small drops of black paint.
  3. Continue until you reach your desired gray shade.

Paint the bumper section using a medium flat brush.

Step #5: Paint the Tires

Using black paint and a smaller brush, fill in the tires. Because fabric paint absorbs well, you typically won’t need multiple coats like you might when painting on wood.

Step #6: Paint the Truck Window

For the truck window, mix a light blue color. Combine 2 parts white and 1 part Indian Turquoise. This soft blue complements the pink truck beautifully!

Paint the window area carefully, switching to a smaller brush to paint around the flower pots.

Step #7: Paint the Details

Now we’ll bring the design to life with colorful details:

  • Paint the license plate white
  • Use bright yellow for a fun pop of color on the taillights
  • If you don’t have terracotta fabric paint for the flower pots, you can create it using regular craft paint and fabric painting medium. Just mix 2 parts craft paint and 1 part fabric medium.

For the flowers, use a variety of bright spring colors like:

  • Yellow
  • Blue
  • Light pink
  • Purple

Mixing a little white into colors creates soft pastel tones that look perfect for spring.

Step #8: Paint the Banner

The banner underneath the truck spells SPRING.

Paint each banner section a different color to keep the design playful and bright. If the traced letters are hard to see, you can lightly go over them with a marker before painting.

Step #9: Add the Lettering

Next, use a small round detail brush and white paint to fill in the lettering. The flower pots spell HELLO, and the banner spells SPRING.

Because you traced the template earlier, you can just paint over the guidelines.

Step #10: Add Final Details

This is the step that makes the entire painting come to life. Using black paint and a detail brush, add sketch-style outlines and accents.

Focus on:

  • Outlining the truck
  • Adding tire tread lines
  • Defining the flowers
  • Outlining the window and bumper

Don’t stress about perfect lines. A slightly sketchy, whimsical outline actually looks more artistic and adds character to the design.

Step #11: Let It Dry and Display

Allow your painted garden flag to dry completely. If you plan to use it outdoors, you can lightly spray it with Scotchgard to help protect it from moisture and mildew. Then slide the flag onto your garden flag stand and enjoy your beautiful DIY spring porch decor!

BONUS: A Fun Porch Decor Idea

One of the things we love about using templates is how versatile they are. You could use the same spring truck template to create:

  • A wooden door hanger
  • A matching porch pillow
  • A welcome sign
  • Yard stakes
  • Indoor wall art

Imagine decorating your entire porch with coordinating handmade pieces!
