Feeling haunted by all the unfinished crafts in your craft room? I call that the craft graveyard. For me, it’s a closet I stuff FULL of unfinished projects, things with a few brushstrokes or pen swipes that somehow didn’t make it past those beginning stages. 

We ALL have one. But it doesn’t make you a quitter. Sometimes life gets in the way. Or sometimes you’re just so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to start!

Believe me, I get it. For years, I believed the story that I “just don’t finish things.” Every abandoned project felt like proof that I wasn’t creative enough or disciplined enough.

But looking back, I don’t think that was ever the problem.

Why So Many Creative Hobbies Get Left Behind

When women tell me they have a closet full of unfinished craft projects, I don’t think they’re lazy. I think they chose a craft that made success feel harder than it needed to be.

Many creative hobbies have a steep learning curve before you ever get to enjoy making something. Maybe you’ve bought a Cricut, a laser machine, or another tool that still hasn’t made it out of the box because you’re worried you’ll do something wrong.

When that happens, it’s easy to convince yourself that you’re just “not artistic.” The truth is, most beginners never needed more talent. They just needed a better first experience.

Why Beginner Door Hanger Painting Feels Different

This is exactly why I fell in love with beginner door hanger painting. Before I ever taught workshops, I thought I wasn’t good at painting either. Every class I took started with a blank canvas, and I spent more time worrying about making mistakes than actually enjoying the process.

One of my favorite things about teaching painting door hangers is watching someone finish their very first project. Not because it’s perfect, but because they finished it. It’s important to celebrate!

When you complete something beautiful, you stop telling yourself you’re “not creative.” You begin to trust the process and believe that maybe you’ve been capable all along.

I’ve watched women paint their first door hanger at a workshop, and have neighbors ask to buy it before they even got home. That’s not because they’re naturally gifted. It’s because they finally experienced success instead of frustration.
