Are you looking for an easy, no-stress way to relax and unwind after a hectic day? Want a hobby you can dive into — no-fuss — whether it’s after the kids are asleep or on the weekends when you have a few minutes to yourself?
DIY painting and crafting might be just what you’re looking for!
Somehow, painting magically shifts your focus away from the stress of the day and onto something creative and calming. I don’t completely understand the brain science behind it, but it slows the mind and body, giving you a chance to truly be present.
So whether you’ve had a really stressful day at work, been caring for a sick child, or are a stay-at-home parent who’s overstimulated, this might just be the thing you need to decompress!
Why Painting & Crafting is the Ultimate Stress Reliever
For me, painting became a lifeline during one of the most stressful periods of my life.
My husband was deployed to Afghanistan with the Kentucky Army National Guard, and I was a stay-at-home mom with two toddlers. Every day felt like an endless loop of dishes, laundry, and “Mom, what’s for dinner?”
It was nearly impossible to relax at the end of the day! I tried shutting my mind off with Netflix or scrolling endlessly on Pinterest for new ideas, until one day, I came across a door hanger project and decided to give it a try.
And as they say… the rest is history!
Painting Gives You a Sense of Accomplishment
What stayed true all these years later is that painting gave me an outlet — a sense of accomplishment that I couldn’t find in my day-to-day routine.
Whether you’re working on a small ornament, a full-size door hanger, or hosting a paint party with friends, painting lets you step away from life’s never-ending to-do list and focus on something just for yourself.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard from women who’ve painted with me — whether at a paint party, during a live stream, or at an in-person event — how painting has changed their lives.
For some, it became a side hustle that brought in extra income, easing financial stress. For others, it gave them renewed confidence and a creative outlet they could call their own. They weren’t painting for anyone else; they were doing it simply because they loved it.
That’s why it’s not just about painting — it’s so much more. If you don’t already have a hobby that gives you these feelings, I encourage you to give painting a try!
Get Started With Your New Hobby
Before you start painting, remind yourself of one thing: it doesn’t have to be perfect. Give yourself permission to enjoy the process. It’s not about creating a masterpiece — it’s about having fun.
Just come to the (crafting) table ready to have a good time and learn something new, and I’m tellin’ ya…you WILL have fun!
Now, let’s see a few tips for helping you get started.
Tip #1: Start with Smaller, Simpler Projects
If you’re new to painting (or just using it for stress relief), start small. A simple project like a 4” or 6” ornament or attachment piece with minimal details is perfect for beginners and provides a quick sense of accomplishment as you build your skills.
Tip #2: Make Time for it
Sometimes, the only way to ensure you get that much-needed me-time is to schedule it. Carve out time — whether it’s 20 minutes a day or a few hours on the weekend — to dedicate to painting.
If daily or weekly painting feels unrealistic, try scheduling a monthly “binge craft” day. Invite friends or enjoy it solo — whatever makes you excited to paint.
Life’s to-do list will never end, so make sure you prioritize yourself!
Tip #3: Create a Relaxing Painting Space
I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to get in the zone when my craft area is messy!
Even if you don’t have a dedicated space, a clean and organized setup — even if it’s just the kitchen table — can make all the difference. Use a basket or cart to keep your supplies handy and make setup and cleanup a breeze.
Tip #4: Use Templates
Door hanger templates are the ultimate helpers for stress-free painting!
They give you a creative starting point, with clear lines to trace and a framework to build on. They act as a guide, so you can jump straight into the fun stuff — like adding color and patterns — without feeling stuck.
Plus, we have the wood blanks to match. They come pre-lasered with designs, so you can paint right inside the lines and can just focus on having a great time!
