How to Paint Your Own Floral Door Hanger Designs

by | Nov 20, 2024

If you’ve been wanting to add nature-inspired elements like leaves and florals to your door hangers but weren’t exactly sure how to incorporate them into your designs, you’re in the right place!

This video (and the notes in this blog) will show you how to find the right florals for every door hanger. Whether you’re painting a fall porch leaner or a spring-inspired door hanger, these tips will help you find exactly what you need to make your designs come to life.

Let’s dive in and create some beautiful floral door hanger designs!

Choosing the Floral Door Hanger Design

One of the best ways to get inspired to add florals and other foliage to your door hangers is to go with seasonal decor. Here’s what I recommend for each season:

  • Winter: Go with greenery that will stand cooler weather, like magnolias, greenery, and, of course, poinsettias — perfect for that holiday feel!
  • Spring: Think of fresh, lively flowers like tulips, daisies, and marigolds. These flowers bring vibrant color to your designs!
  • Summer: Dogwoods and sunflowers are my go-to. Sunflowers also make a great flower for the late-summer-to-fall transition since they’re commonly used in fall decor!
  • Fall: Chrysanthemums and late-blooming sunflowers are classic fall choices. Pair them with deep, rich autumn tones for a cozy look!

Choosing Your Design Style

Now that you know which flowers pair well with each season, it’s time to think about your design! There are many ways to paint your florals, all depending on the style you want for your door hanger.

I usually go with one of these:

  • Whimsical flowers: Perfect for beginners! Start by laying down a base color, and then use a thin round brush to outline the petals and add details like stripes, polka dots, or even leopard print. It’s a quick and easy way to give your flowers some charm!
  • Realistic florals: This is great if you’re looking for a challenge since you’ll need to focus on layering shades to add depth. Use real-life flowers as a guide when choosing your colors.

What Brushes You’ll Need For Your Designs

Depending on your chosen style and flower type, you’ll need a few brushes to help you get the look:

  • Angle tip brush: Perfect for creating pointed petal tips or leaves, and for shading.
  • Filbert tip brush: Ideal for rounded petal shapes and achieving that soft, curved look on flower petals.
  • Round tip brush: Great for sketching out the shape of your flower or adding details like vines or outlines. It’s versatile and lets you define some shapes.
  • Liner brush: A super-thin brush for fine details like veins on leaves or delicate stems. This brush is also great for adding intricate details!
