Using Procreate to Create a Template Mockup

by | Feb 10, 2022

Have you purchased a template from my shop www.shopdoorhangers.com and thought you would love to see if the vision you have in your head for painting it would look good on a completed door hanger? If your answer to that questions is yes, then using the app, Procreate, on an iPad with an Apple Pencil is a great way to get this vision. It’s also a great way to create template mockups if you have a customer that would like to see a design idea before it is finalized and added to a door hanger! Using Procreate to create template mockups could save you the hassle of sanding down a door hanger and painting it again because the colors you used didn’t workout like you envisioned. Let’s dive right in to see how it works!

What is Procreate?

Procreate is an app for iPads that can be downloaded from the App Store and, with an Apple Pencil, you are able to use it for a variety of things. I personally love using it to create template mockups and design door hangers from start to finish. I have created a course called Procreate for Makers that will teach you how to navigate Procreate like a pro and how to use it for your door hanger business. The fun part is though, that there’s no limit to what it can be used for as the designs created in Procreate could be used on t-shirts, mugs, earrings, pillows, door hangers, stickers, and so much more!

How to Create Template Mockups

While the possibilities really are endless, today, I’m going to walk you through how to create a template mockup of a door hanger. It will be a brief overview as I go more in depth on this topic in my Procreate for Makers course, but I’ll cover the basics and attach a video for you to see how I use Procreate to create template mockups.

To start, you’re going to open your Procreate App on your iPad, don’t forget to have your Apple Pencil handy as that will make creating the mockup much easier. Next, import and open your template that you purchased from www.shopdoorhangers.com or wherever you purchase your templates. This will pull your design into your workspace in Procreate. Use the color palette at the top left to customize the colors you’d like to use on your door hanger. Try to get these colors as close to the paint colors you plan to use so that your final mockup has accurate colors. Next, you’re going to customize the brushes that you’ll use when creating the template mockup.

Coloring the Template Mockup

Now that all of your basics are done, here comes the fun part. Similar to adult coloring books, start to color in your template with the colors and various brushes you’ve just decided to use.  As your coloring, play around with the various brushes to add patterns or textures. For this particular one, I added polka dots to the Santa hat and then went back to erase the extra ones where the polka dots laid out over the edges of the Santa hat. Once your done coloring in your template mockup, you’re going to go ahead and add details and highlight lines just like you would on the finished door hanger. This gives an accurate representation to what the finished product will look like. Once complete, you can take the template mockup you created and use it to paint the door hanger!

Do You Need a Visual on How to Create Template Mockups?

I know that was a lot of information to take in, so if you’re more of a visual learner you can watch this video on my Facebook page. It shows how I use Procreate to color a template for a mockup of a door hanger.

If you’re looking for even more in depth tutorials where I walk you through step-by-step how to do this and more with your Procreate app, I highly suggest you consider my Procreate for Makers course. Procreate for Makers will teach you all the basics of Procreate in short, bite-sized tutorials. By the end of the course, you will know how to create a design that you can use in your business or sell, or you’ll just know how to have fun drawing with your iPad and Pencil. I wish there was something like this for me when I was learning to navigate Procreate, and I am so excited that I now have taught myself enough about Procreate that I can teach it to you. You can do this, join my course and let’s get started!
