Taming the Creative Chaos: 10 Tips for Organizing Any Craft Room

by | Jan 30, 2025

Is your craft room more of a catch-all than a creative haven? Do you dread entering a space that’s supposed to inspire you? That was me when 2025 rolled around. I looked around my craft room and realized…it needed some TLC!

And while the clutter and disorganization that built up over time was a little overwhelming at first, with a little planning and some elbow grease, I was able to get it straightened out!

So if you know it’s time to get your craft room in tip-top shape, keep reading! I’m sharing my top 10 tips so you can transform your space into something that sparks creativity!

The Problem: When Creativity Gets Drowned Out by Clutter

To each their own — if you like your craft room not totally organized to the nines, that’s fine! And if you like everything to always have its own space, no shame. Somewhere in between it all? You’re like me!

Personally, I don’t like when my craft space starts to become a catch-all. There needs to be some sense of organization, or it’s hard for me to focus.

Here’s how I know my craft room is starting to become (or has already) become a catch-all:

  • Surfaces become dumping grounds rather than workspaces.
  • Storage areas are not being fully utilized.
  • Unfinished projects pile up, creating a feeling of overwhelm.
  • A general lack of motivation to create because the space doesn’t feel inviting.

But an organized craft room isn’t just about looking good — it’s about creating an environment that fosters creativity!  By taking the time to declutter and reorganize, you’ll be able to put your best foot (or paintbrush) forward and make more door hangers and craft projects!

My Top 10 Tips for Organizing a Craft Room

If your craft room is a mess (like mine was!), here are a few things you can do to whip it back into shape.

Tip #1: Clear it Out

Anything that obviously doesn’t belong in your craft room…clear it out! Kitchen items, outgrown toys, and random household items should be relocated to their rightful places.

Bring them back to where they belong so you have more space for the fun stuff (like more ribbon!).

Tip #2: Put Like with Like

The best way to stay organized is to group similar items together. This makes it easier to see what you have and where things should go. Gather all your door hangers in one area, all your paint supplies in another, and so on.

Tip #3: Assess and Adjust

How you once organized it may not serve you any longer…it’s time to rethink how you use your space!

Does your current space meet your needs? Is your work area actually functional? Is storage being used to its fullest potential? Or is it much too frustrating trying to find supplies?

Tip #4: Trash or Treasure?

Decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to sell (and be honest, you know deep down…you can’t keep it all!). Gather trash bags and boxes to keep your discard piles organized.

If there are unfinished projects you may want to complete, put them together in a bin that will be easy to grab when you have some extra time to be creative.
If you have an addiction to buying craft supplies like ribbon (guilty!), consider parting with some of them. If you are not using it, it’s taking up valuable space. You can sell your unused items on sites like Whatnot, or donate them!

Tip #5: Prioritize a Clear Surface

For me, a clear table is one of the best ways to garner some motivation, so I like to make sure everything is cleared off. If you find that your desk, work surface, or craft island has too much on it, clear it off and find those items a new home!

Tip #6: Cabinet and Closet Clean-Out

Along the same lines of clearing out what you no longer use, make sure you’re also checking spaces like cabinets and closets. And when in doubt, containers are your best friend!

Use clear containers and baskets to organize smaller items — this makes it easier to see what you have and keeps things tidy. Baskets also help to make items accessible if you have supplies that you want to keep within reach

Tip #7: Create Zones

One of my favorite ways to stay organized is to reorganize items based on how often you use them. Place frequently used items at easy-to-reach areas, and less frequently used items up high or out of the way.

You can also designate specific areas for different types of supplies, like paint, tools, and project materials.

Not sure how to divvy it out? Consider where you would look for a specific item if you need it. For example, you can designate a spot for tools and another one for paper products so you’ll be able to reach for what you need without thinking about where it is.

Tip #8: Embrace Vertical Storage

Mounting these paint cubes onto my wall was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my craft room. Just sayin’! (And you can learn more about how I did it here.)

Tip #9: Don’t Forget the Details

Scrub down your work surfaces after decluttering. It will make your space feel shiny and new! I also like to add labels to my bins and containers to keep things even more organized.

Tip #10: Make it a Habit

Once you’re done organizing your craft room, the work isn’t done! It’s important to do what you can during your normal routine to make sure it doesn’t get chaotic again! Set aside a small window of time each week or month for a quick tidying session, and put away supplies when you’re finished with them.

It will save you so much time in the long run!
