Ever wondered what it’s really like behind the scenes here at Southern Adoornments Decor? In this post, we’re taking you inside our laser woodshop, where all the wooden door hanger blanks are cut before I teach you how to paint them on YouTube and Facebook!
Michael, my husband, runs this shop along with my brother Wes, and together they keep everything in this creative business running smoothly.
We’ve never really shared the ins and outs of our shop before, but today we’re highlighting a few features that make a big difference in how we work. If you’re dreaming of building a shop of your own, or just like seeing how things work behind the curtain, you’ll love this video!
Resources for Laser Woodshop Organization
Here are a few of the things we mentioned in the video:
- Wire shelving: Found at Sam’s Club, Walmart, or Lowe’s
- Construction lumber & MDF: Local lumber yards or Liberty Hardwoods (buying in bulk saves money!)
- Chalkboard paint: For easy labeling
- Shelf liner: Found at Menards, Walmart, or even on clearance for just a couple of bucks
Michael’s Favorite Feature: The Loft with Removable Railings
When we designed the shop, one of the smartest choices was to include a loft area above the shipping and office space. This open floor plan gives us so much room to move around, plus extra space up top for storage.
How it works:
- Each railing section on the loft is removable
- A forklift can lift pallets of supplies directly into the loft
- A pallet jack stays up there, so we don’t have to constantly haul things up and down the stairs
This setup makes it easy to keep plenty of shipping boxes stocked downstairs, while storing extra boxes, event supplies, and bulk items safely up top.
Tamara’s Favorite Feature: Door Hanger Organization
Before, our door hangers were just stacked in piles, which meant digging to the bottom if I needed a certain size. Not fun! Now, thanks to a little DIY, we’ve got a system that works like a filing cabinet for door hangers.
How it works:
- To build the shelves, we used wire shelving, reinforced with construction lumber for strength
- V-grooves were cut into the wood to create adjustable cubbies
- A chalkboard-painted MDF front lets us label each section by size
- Shelf liner keeps door hangers from sliding or getting dented
This change made a world of difference — now it’s quick and easy to find exactly what we need!
Wes’s Favorite Feature: Shipping Box Shelving
My brother Wes built one of the most useful features in the shop: our shipping box shelving system. Before, boxes sat on the floor where they were vulnerable to dust, pests, and even rain blowing in. Now, everything is stored neatly off the ground, protected, and easy to see.
With boxes labeled and separated by size, we know exactly when we’re running low. And we also don’t have to worry about the boxes getting damaged if a little rain blows in!

These are just a few of the behind-the-scenes features that keep our woodshop running every day. We’ve learned a lot through trial and error, and we’re still making improvements as we go. But it’s a fun process nonetheless.
If you’re building a shop of your own, hopefully these ideas spark some inspiration! And if you’re just here for the peek inside, we hope you enjoyed seeing how much love goes into preparing every order we send your way.
