How to Start Selling Your Wooden Door Hangers

by | May 21, 2025

Have you ever caught yourself wondering, “Could I actually sell one of my door hangers?” or “I really love doing this…could it ever be more than a hobby?” If so, you’re in the right place.

I’ve seen time and time again that just one sale a month can be enough to transform the way you think about your door hangers. It’s also enough to cover the cost of ONE entire month inside the Painter’s Clubhouse. That’s how profitable it can be!

And even more exciting? That little sale might open the door to a fun and fulfilling side hustle you didn’t even see coming. So today, I’m peeling back the curtain to show you how simple and doable that first step really is, with real stories from Painter’s Clubhouse Sisters who started just like you.

Selling Your Door Hangers: Real Stories from the Clubhouse

Meet Painter’s Clubhouse Member, Lisa

Let’s talk about Lisa Cato, one of our amazing PC Sisters. Lisa painted a Patriotic Lola double door hanger and almost didn’t sell it because of how it was stapled. She thought it wasn’t “good enough.”

Sound familiar? Have you ever caught yourself saying the same thing? Then you’re going to love what happens next.

Someone ended up purchasing it for $70…and they didn’t care about the staples at all!

Now Lisa’s getting ready for local markets. She posted the cutest photo of her husband’s car stuffed full of spring, fall, and kids’ art kits. She even joked that she might need a bigger vehicle soon.

That just goes to show you that you don’t need a full-on plan to be successful. You can make it work with what you have and figure it out as you go!

Meet Painter’s Clubhouse Member, Holly

And then there’s Holly Stillwagon. She didn’t even mean to start selling. She simply posted a photo of her half-finished Bandana Lola door hanger after Night 1 of our recent workshop.

It wasn’t even done yet, but someone had already commented that they wanted to purchase it. By the time the workshop was over, she had made a sale (and covered her ticket cost and then some!).

Then that same person asked if Holly could paint a few more designs for them, and before she knew it, Holly’s Painter’s Clubhouse membership was paid for!

She didn’t have a strategy. She didn’t plan on selling. She just shared what she was working on out of joy, and the rest is history!

Start Small to Minimize Pressure

What about you? What’s holding you back from selling your wooden door hangers?

The truth is, you don’t need a business license, website, or fancy craft room to get started. You can start exactly where you are, with what you have.

Beginner-Friendly Ways to Sell Your First Door Hanger

Not sure where to start selling your door hangers? Try these ideas! Each one is low-stress and totally doable — no storefront needed.

  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Local Buy/Sell groups
  • Church or school craft fairs
  • Vendor malls or pop-ups
  • Paint parties with friends
  • Art kits for kids or adults

Nervous to post online? Instead of posting, “For Sale,” try a soft sale, using something along the lines of, “I’m thinking about selling these…would anyone be interested?”

This takes the pressure off of you, and it opens up the conversation in a more casual, friendly way (that’s also what Holly did — and look where it led! Just saying!).

Pricing Your Wooden Door Hangers

Aside from the nerves of the getting-started part, this tends to be what stops most door hanger makers from selling. They either don’t know what to charge, or they aren’t sure they should charge much at all because their door hanger “isn’t perfect.”

Here’s a truth that has helped me, and countless other Painter’s Clubhouse members when selling their door hangers…

Just because it’s handmade doesn’t mean it’s not valuable. In fact, that’s exactly what makes it special!

Lisa almost didn’t sell her door hanger because of one little staple, but it ended up selling for more than she would have ever thought. Holly’s wasn’t finished with hers, and someone still wanted it.

It’s easy to see the flaws and forget that people love your heart, your story, and the time you put into what you make. There’s someone out there waiting for your art!
