Running a Crafty Business Isn’t Always About Painting
Every morning begins with turning on the lights in my craft room — and moving my cat out of my chair. For some reason, she insists that my chair is the best seat in the house! Once I’m settled in, the day looks a little different depending on what’s on the calendar.
One misconception is that I spend the majority of my time painting, but there’s so much more involved in running a crafty business! I usually only paint once or twice a week, and that’s often live on Facebook or inside our Painter’s Clubhouse membership.
Here’s what I focus on to keep the wheels turning:
- Mondays: You’ll usually find me in my sunroom with my laptop, catching up on emails, responding to comments, and planning content
- Tuesdays: This is when I’m often filming a Facebook Live, creating YouTube tutorials, or recording lessons for future workshops and kits.
- Other days: It might be a mix of content planning, painting projects, or Zoom calls with my team — it just depends on what we have on the calendar.
My Favorite Place to Work on my Crafty Business: The Sunroom
Working from home is such a blessing, but it also takes discipline. I’ve learned that if I don’t get up, get dressed, and put on makeup, not much gets done. So I treat every day like I’m headed into work so I can stay focused!
But one of the biggest perks of working from home is being able to work in my sunroom! It has the best view, and sometimes I even take my laptop outside and dip my feet in the water of our pool while I work.
This is usually where I handle:
- Emails and responding to comments
- Planning SA Live or Painter’s Clubhouse projects
- Behind-the-scenes business conversations
- Weekly Zoom meetings with my online business manager
It’s also where I brainstorm and dream up new content for the Painter’s Clubhouse, often collaborating with my good friend Lauren. We love figuring out what trends our members are excited about and how to bring them to life in door hanger designs.
Behind the Scenes in the Woodshop
We couldn’t do what we do here at Southern Adoornments Decor without the woodshop. What you don’t often see is the work happening there, thanks to my husband and my brother. They’re the ones cutting and preparing all the wooden door hanger blanks and pieces you see in our shop and workshops. We couldn’t do it without them!
This part of the business is a HUGE operation, especially when preparing for events like SA Live. We can’t show you all of the things we’re working on (they’re top secret), but we’re spending lots of time cutting thousands of pieces for the big event!
Outside of events like SA Live, every step — from laser-cutting and sanding to organizing and packaging — goes through careful hands before it ever makes it to your door!

Why I Love Running This Crafty Business
Running a creative business from home isn’t always easy. It requires flexibility, discipline, and a willingness to pivot when things don’t go as planned. But it also comes with so many blessings — like being able to sneak in laundry between meetings or enjoy working by the pool when the weather is nice.
At the end of the day, I’m so thankful for this business, for the community that surrounds it, and for the chance to create something meaningful every single day! I wouldn’t have it any other way!
