Calling all moms! If you’ve been looking for a fun way to get everyone together for some much-needed downtime, paint parties are exactly what you need! They’re the perfect blend of relaxation and fun, giving you time to catch up with your friends in a low-key, enjoyable way. In my opinion, this is the best mom’s night in idea!
Get everyone together, grab your paints, and let’s have a blast! This post will show you everything you need to host your own paint party.
What’s a mom’s night in paint party?
Door hangers are those cute, decorative pieces you hang on your front door or on your porch (NOT those “do not disturb” signs you hang on your hotel door). They come in all shapes and sizes, and painting them is a relaxing and creative way to decorate your home.
Paint parties are events where you gather everyone in one room to create these door hangers together!
In fact, when my husband was deployed in the military, I used to host these parties once a month to help me take a break from the day-to-day. They were great as a mom, too, because other moms also brought their kids to the parties. So, we painted, and they played. It was fun for everyone!
To host, all you really need to do is figure out which design you’ll use, order your wood blanks (or cut them out if you prefer), and you’re good to go!
Planning the perfect mom’s night in paint party
Ready to host your own paint party? Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need to do:
- Pick a date and time: Make sure to give yourself and your guests enough time to prepare. I recommend planning ahead by a month if you can, and no sooner than two weeks before.
- Choose a design: From holiday fun to cute hellos, the options are endless! Be sure to check out our shop, where you can find door hanger templates for whatever you’re feeling! We also have the matching wood blanks if you don’t want to cut them out yourself.
- Set the price: First, decide if you will be providing all the supplies. If so, make sure to calculate your costs, including wood, paint, and brushes. To keep things simple, double your costs to cover any unexpected expenses. For example, if it costs $15 per person, charge $30. You’d be surprised how quickly these expenses and supplies add up!
Get your supplies ready
Gathering supplies? Here’s everything you’ll need (aside from your door hanger blanks and templates):
- Plastic tablecloths
- Water cups for rinsing brushes
- Paper towels
- Foam plates for mixing paint
- Paint that matches your design
- Paintbrushes
- Sponge pouncers (if needed)
- Baby wipes to clean up any spills
- A hairdryer (or two) to help your door hangers dry faster
- Sealant spray
The number of guests you invite will determine how much you’ll need for each!
Pro tips for the best mom’s night in paint party
Now that you have everything you need, I’m going to leave you with a few pro tips to help you have the BEST time!
Set up stations
Each guest should have a comfortable spot to work. If you don’t have easels, no worries — a flat surface, like your dining room table or a card table, will work just fine!
Once you know how many people will be joining, you can get set up before everyone arrives. Lay out all the supplies each person will need, that way, you can get started as soon as you’re ready!
Stock up on paint
You don’t need a ton of paint, but make sure you have enough white, black, and key colors for the design. The last thing you want is to run out of paint during the party! And make sure the paint you purchase is acrylic paint as it will work best on door hangers!
Bring snacks
You can choose to purchase your own snacks or have a potluck-style party and have everyone bring their favorite. Trust me, you will get hungry!
Understand the time commitment
Paint parties take longer than you think! Plan for about three hours so people can make arrangements accordingly — and so you don’t feel rushed while you’re having a good time!
Take pictures
Not only will this help capture memories, but if you ever decide to turn paint parties into a business, you’ll already have social proof. Take group shots, individual photos of everyone with their finished door hangers, and even in-progress shots during painting.
Dress code
Encourage everyone to wear old clothes or bring an apron to protect against any accidental spills.
Ready to host? Let’s get you started!
Remember — the most important thing is to have FUN! You don’t have to be perfect or get every detail just right. You’re there to spend time with your friends, make new memories, and indulge in a hobby you enjoy. Focus on that, and the rest will come together seamlessly!
