Looking to practice your door hanger painting skills? Creating door hangers from scratch just for practice can be pricey. You know you want to do a trial run before making a door hanger to hang on your front porch or even to sell/gift to someone else.
But you don’t want the supplies to go to waste, right? That’s where upcycling comes in!
Recently, I even enlisted help from some of the brilliant ladies in my Painter’s Clubhouse group, who are the queens of upcycling.
I can’t wait to show you how they turn these budget-friendly crafts into some beautiful works of art. Take a look at the video below, or read the notes version on this blog, to see how you can practice your skills on some upcycled goods.

Budget-Friendly Craft Idea #1: From Cheese Boards to Holiday Décor
Let’s kick things off with Pam Savage. She has a talent for turning almost anything into beautiful seasonal pieces. One of her go-to items? Cheese boards!
She’s transformed these simple flat boards into adorable snowman heads and Santa-themed decorations by adding little details like buttons and buckles. How cute!
Budget-Friendly Craft Idea #2: Snowman Buckets
Pam also made this fun snowman bucket! She added festive red checkered towels and berries to stage it for display.
Pam’s bucket was such a hit that she even made a sunflower-themed one for summer — complete with intricate dots, shading, and even a tiny ladybug!
Budget-Friendly Craft Idea #3: Dollar Store Frames with a Personal Touch
Linda turned a simple wooden picture frame from the dollar store into a custom baby sign! With just a little paint, she created something totally new by adding a cute dinosaur and custom details like the baby’s birth info.
This is such an easy and affordable way to create a personalized gift that’s perfect for a new parent!
Budget-Friendly Craft Idea #4: Rainbow ‘Hello’ Sign
Marie Mosley took an ordinary “hello” sign and gave it a holographic makeover to match her art studio’s rainbow theme. This is a great way to bring some color into your space!
Budget-Friendly Craft Idea #5: Garden Makeover for a Weathered Rooster
Shelly Steagall found a rooster statue in her yard that needed a little TLC. So what did she do? She repainted it, gave it a fresh look, and now it’s back in the garden, looking good as new.
I did something similar with a rusty rooster in my yard this summer and was amazed at the difference! You can do the same with any weather-worn garden decor — just make sure you seal it well.
Tips for Your Next Upcycle Door Hanger Project
Now that you’ve got some inspiration from our PC sisters, here are a few things to keep in mind before you start your next project:
- Choose the Right Paint: Most surfaces will take regular craft paint, but sometimes you’ll need a primer, especially on materials like metal.
- Seal It to Keep It Protected: This step is especially important if the item will be sitting outside!
- Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things: If you see something unique and inspiring, even if it’s something as random as a fan blade or pizza pan (yes, I’ve seen this before!), don’t be afraid to get creative with it. You never know what you might end up with.
