Do you ever want to customize the lettering on your door hanger but aren’t sure how to do it without having to do it by hand? Maybe you don’t have the best penmanship or you want a font that you aren’t sure how to create. Today I’m going to teach you how to use Canva to add lettering to a door hanger. Canva has many free fonts that you can use to customize your door hanger. Let’s dive right in!

How to Use Canva
I use Canva for so many different projects – hand lettering for door hangers, graphics for my social media, bulletins for church, and so much more. It is simple to use and today I’m going to walk you through how to use Canva step-by-step to create lettering that you can transfer right to your door hanger.
To start, you’re going to go to the Canva website and click the purple “Create” button at the top right. Next, you’re going to click “custom size,” and type in 11 x 8.5 and change pixels (px) to inches (in). This is the dimensions of a piece of printer paper so you can print it from your computer.
How to Edit Your Text in Canva
Once you’ve added the dimensions of your paper a page will pop up for you to work with. Click the “text” button and then click “add heading.” You will want each word in its own text box if you are wanting different fonts or certain words to be a different size. Once you’ve typed your words out and they are all in their own text box, you’ll want to change the font.
To change the font, select one of your words then double click on it so that word is highlighted. Go to the font bar beside the font size section and change the font to the font that you prefer. After you play around with the fonts to get it how you like it, I’m going to teach you how to use Canva to see what the font will look like on your door hanger.
Fitting the Lettering on Your Door Hanger
One of the really cool things about Canva is that you can use it to see exactly how the lettering will look on your door hanger. To do this be sure you have a photo of your door hanger that you can upload into Canva. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a clear photo of the door hanger.
To upload your photo, click the “uploads” tab on the right of the screen, then click the “upload media” button. You will upload the photo from wherever it is on your device. Once it is uploaded it will show up under images in the “uploads” tab. Click the photo to add it to your page. Adjust the letters sizing and placement to see how they will fit on the door hanger. This is also how you could go about creating a mock up door hanger photo.
Want to change the color of your text?Hold down the shift key as you select all the words on the door hanger. Once they’re all selected, click on the “A” with a rainbow line beneath it to adjust the text colors.
If you’d like to add a drop shadow to your letters, click “Effects” at the top of the screen then click on “Shadow” on the left. You can adjust the offset and transparency of the shadow below. This is just for an example to see what your door hanger will look like when it’s complete.
How to Transfer the Lettering to Your Door Hanger
Transferring the lettering to your door hanger is simple, but first you will need to remove the drop shadow and delete the photo of your door hanger. Next, select all the words then drag your mouse to make them larger. Now you will need to take a ruler and measure the widest area that you will be placing your letter on. In Canva click “File” and be sure that there are checkmarks beside “Show Ruler” and “Show Print Bleed.” Use the rulers along the side of your page to be sure that your words fit on the door hanger. Click the arrow with the line under it on Canva to download your file then print from your computer.
Once your lettering is printed, cut around the words so that you can see how the letters will fit around the design. Tape the bottom part of your lettering printout to the door hanger, then place some graphite paper underneath. Trace the lettering with a pen, then use a Posca Paint Pen or a round tip brush to paint the lettering on your door hanger. There you have it, now you know how to use Canva for you door hangers! With a variety of font options the possibilities are endless.
