DIY Burlap Bow – the Easy Way!

Since I’ve started helping people paint their own door hangers, I’ve realized that I get a lot of the same questions from lots of different people. It’s one reason that I wanted to start this blog, so that I could help other crafters learn all of my tricks and tips for painted door hangers! 

I’ve recently shared some tips about how to use a door hanger blank vs a template, how to cut out your own wooden door hangers, how to choose brushes, and even how to perfect your hand lettering skills! So now I want to help with a question that I get all of the time – how to make cute door hanger bows! The tutorial in this post features an easy burlap and buffalo plaid bow that even a beginner can make!

First, I painted this Christmas wheelbarrow door hanger, full of holiday gifts! If you already follow me on facebook, you might have caught the facebook live I did to show you how painted the buffalo plaid check pattern.

If you want to follow the same design for this project, you can grab the blank template or digital cut file from my online shop! (Or, you can even buy one that I’ve already painted, and then you’ll only have to add your handmade bow!)

Next, I gathered up all of the ribbon that I wanted to use for this bow. This project is perfect for scraps of ribbon because it only takes about 7″ of ribbon for each piece!

Making the Bow Come Together:

On my bow, I used five pieces of ribbon, each piece about 7″ long, plus some jute twine/string. I had one piece of 6″ wide burlap ribbon, two pieces of 2.5″ white flannel buffalo wired plaid ribbon, one piece of 1.5″ red flannel buffalo wired plaid ribbon. Plus, for a bonus layer, I added a piece of this lattice-style, burlap “window” ribbon.

Then, all that I had to do was layer the ribbon. I played around with the pieces to see which style would look best. And once I was happy with the arrangement and the layers, I just needed to add the final details! So I fluffed up the wired ribbon pieces so that they would hold their shape, and tied it all up with my jute string in the middle! So quick and easy. In fact, here’s a very short time lapse video that shows each step from start to finish!
