Feeling like your door hangers could use an extra special something? Want to challenge yourself and try something new? It’s time to start using fabric on your door hangers!
Adding fabric gives your projects a splash of texture, a pop of color, and a little bit of charm that paint alone just can’t achieve. But how can you start incorporating this into your designs?
With a little creativity and inspiration from our amazing Painters Clubhouse community, I’m going to show you some easy ways to start incorporating fabric into your projects in this post.
By the end, you’ll be itching to raid your fabric stash or head to your nearest craft store to get what you need!
Ready? Let’s get to it!
Fabric Idea #1: Use it for Accent Pieces
One of our crowd favorites in the Painters Clubhouse was a scarecrow door hanger created by Wanda Hallman! The 3D eyes and hat brim are my favorite. She even used fabric to create a patch for the hat band and a bow tie.
This project is a great example of pairing your paint colors with your fabric so everything works together to create a beautiful end result!
Fabric Idea #2: Cover the Surface
If you’re a fan of Pioneer Woman kitchen supplies like me, you’ll LOVE this door hanger, created by Pam Savage! She used Mod Podge to attach the fabric on the door hanger, giving it that extra detail that’s hard to achieve with paint alone.
Pam also created a super cute Valentine’s Day truck door hanger! She painted the truck and added fabric for the flowers.
Fabric Idea #3: Add Texture
Check out this hexagon-shaped door hanger by Dixie Brown, featuring a cute cow print made from fleece fabric! This shows that you can experiment with different fabric types as long as they go on smooth.
Fabric Idea #4: Use it on Matching Door Hangers
I love how Linda Helser created a matching set of mummy door hangers! She differentiated them by giving one mummy a bow tie and the other a bow on top.
This type of set is perfect if you’re creating something to hang on the front porch, especially on double doors. And I love how cohesive it is!
Fabric Idea #5: Use it on a Wreath
How about a wreath that doubles as a door hanger? Teresa Torque made this beautiful design that uses fabric for a fun touch of texture! I also love how using fabric makes the attachment in the middle stand out.
Fabric Idea #6: Use it for Bows
Bows are one of the best ways to add flair to your door hangers. Whether you create a festive one like Pam Savage…
Or a mason jar bow like Laura Peterson…
Bows are a fun accent to add to any door hanger!
Fabric Idea #7: Use it to Create a Pattern
Have you ever wanted to add a pattern to your door hanger but didn’t feel comfortable painting it just yet? Try fabric!
Linda Helser created a rugged welcome sign with camouflage fabric on the bottom, avoiding the stress of trying to paint such a detailed pattern. It turned out great!
Tips to Make Fabric on Your Door Hangers Go Further
Adding fabric to your door hangers is pretty easy. There’s a lot less that goes into it than painting, but here are a few tips to make your fabric go even further and last even longer!
- Avoid hot glue: When adding fabric, use an adhesive like Fabric Tac instead of hot glue. Hot glue tends to soften in the sunlight, which can cause your fabric to come loose over time. Avoid super glue, too, since it’s messy and you can often see the glue once it’s dry.
- Use Mod Podge for larger areas: For bigger areas, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge before attaching your fabric. It’s the best way to get a strong bond that goes on smooth.
- Seal the deal: Don’t forget to seal your fabric! Just like when you spray your door hangers with sealant, this will help prevent wear and tear over time.
- Check the clearance rack: Next time you’re at the craft store, head to the clearance section. You might just find a great deal on something you love!
