How to DIY a Painted Farmhouse Wooden Sign
Okay, I admit it. I am in LOVE with farmhouse decor. This may not be news to you if you’ve seen me painting farmhouse animal door hangers like chickens, cows, llamas, and the incredibly adorable floral pig. But, today… today we’re talking farmhouse wooden signs! These signs make the perfect addition to your farmhouse kitchen. Their rustic charm welcomes visitors to come in and stay awhile. And today you’re going to learn how to DIY a painted farmhouse wooden sign.

These farmhouse wooden signs are cozy and welcoming and, depending on the message you choose to paint inside, they can be inspirational, too! A giant group of us painted these at the LIVE 2020 event. We had a wonderful time being creative, learning tips and techniques, and sharing laughter and new friendships.
Getting Started – Building the Box
The first step to DIY a painted farmhouse wooden sign is… building the box.
You’ll need two types of wood for this project. We used 1/4″ revolution plywood for what turns out to be the bottom of the box. This plywood is cut into 12″ by 7″ pieces. We used this compound miter saw.
Of course, you know we need smooth edges. So the next step was to sand all the way around the edges using this Dewalt random orbital sander.
The other wood we used for this project was long, thin pieces of 1″ x 2″. These were cut into two different sizes – 6 5/8″ and 12″. You need two of each size to make the sides of the box that will become your painted farmhouse wooden sign.
The sides were attached to each other and then the bottom to the sides using this nail gun. There’s something so satisfying – and more than a little bit loud – about using a nail gun.
You’ll see what I mean when you watch the video below that takes you through building a wooden box step by step.

Now It’s Time to Paint!
We had so much fun painting this farmhouse wooden sign together at our LIVE 2020 event! As you can see, even though we all painted the same project, each painter put her own spin in it, especially with color choices. We used my favorite paints, DecoArt Americana.
For best results, paint the base, or bottom, of your wooden box first. Using a neutral color helps the quote pop! Next, paint the frame – here, choose a color that goes with your kitchen decor or just something that makes you smile.
After you let your wooden box dry thoroughly, it’s time to stencil. Check out all the stencils we have available in our shop. We have a ton of stencils – both patterns and messages.
I LOVED watching all of our painters create – we had so much fun! Check out the video below to share in the fun we had that day and to get a preview of the fun to be had at next year’s LIVE event!
