One question that I get asked a lot is how to choose the best paintbrushes for painting door hangers or other painted craft projects, so I wanted to share some of my favorites with you. I have gathered quite a collection over the years and definitely have my favorites! (I think Marie Kondo might have a field day in my craft room – ha!)
I recently took my Painter’s Clubhouse members for a virtual walkthrough at Michael’s craft store for our January Painter’s Club, and we spent a lot of time looking at the brush section. My biggest recommendation is that I look for brushes with “nylon” bristles, which can narrow down the options. I do have several of my personal favorite brushes listed in my online shop. So, if the craft store gets too overwhelming, you can order directly from me and have my recommended brushes shipped right to your door!
It’s also important to gather a variety of sizes and shapes. For background colors, you’ll want to use large brushes to cover a lot of area, but for detail work, you will want a variety of smaller shapes and sizes to match your needs. For example, for handlettering, I usually like to use a Filbert-shaped brush.
Here’s an example of choosing the right brush sizes for hand-lettering on a Facebook live video from my Facebook page. Make sure you follow me there, too, for even more tutorials!
