This might seem like a random blog post, but I get so many questions about my curly hair. My curls have kind of become my signature. Everyone wants to know what kind of hair products I use and what I do to keep my curls looking fresh. So I thought I would share with you all some of my favorite tips and tricks for preserving my curls and how I tamed my curly hair.
I should preface this by saying that it has definitely been a journey. I haven’t always embraced my naturally curly hair. If you watch some of my older videos, you will see where I had my hair straightened. I did that for many years. I used hot irons and flat irons and lots of hair products to straighten and flatten out my curls. All of the heat damaged my hair. It made it dry and brittle and my hair broke off. So come along with me on my curly hair journey!

My Curly Hair Guru
So I discovered a guy named Scott Musgrave, and you should totally look him up if you have curly hair. I found him and embarked on a curly hair journey and I’m really loving the results. Scott is the creator of the Curly Hair Artistry on Facebook. He has a course you can take on how to take care of your curls and then you are allowed to join his Curly Hair Artistry private Facebook group. I took the course and I’m really loving the results!
My Curly Hair Process After Washing My Hair
If you follow my Instagram stories, you’ve seen me really loving my curly hair journey and sharing my process for preserving my curls. I only wash my hair two times a week now. With curly hair, you want to lock in the moisture to preserve the curl. If you’re washing your hair every single day, you are stripping the moisture out of your hair. Your natural oils do not stay in your hair so if you can go several days without washing, your hair won’t dry out as much. I try to go as long as I can in between washings, but my hair usually starts to look like a rat’s nest after four days.
When it’s time to wash my hair I use Acure Curiously Clarifying Shampoo With Lemongrass & Argan and then follow up with Innersense Organic Beauty Color Radiance Daily Conditioner. While my hair is still wet, I apply this Innersense Organic Beauty Quiet Calm Curl Control. The curl cream injects moisture back into your hair if you want to keep your curls moist. It may look crazy but it will tighten that curl back up and it will kind of revitalize your curls. Finally, I add a little bit of hair gel and then wrap my head in a towel for about 10 minutes to soak up excess moisture.
To dry my hair I always use the Infiniti PRO by Conair 1875 Watt Texture Styling Hair Dryer with this amazing diffuser that looks like a trombone. My curls are sucked into the bell of the diffuser and then air circulates around them while drying them. After it’s 100% dry, use your hands to scrunch out any crunchiness. Your hair will be soft and curly!
Preserving My Curls Overnight
I have often been asked how I preserve my hair overnight. In between washings, I spritz my hair with water to reactivate the product and then use the hair dryer to dry it and refresh the volume. I wear a silk bonnet to bed. When I wake up the next morning and pull the bonnet off, my curls looked exactly the way they did when I went to bed. The bonnet has a little stretchy elastic band in the back, making it very comfortable to sleep in. You might look a little funny, but I guarantee when you wake up in the morning your curls aren’t frizzy or crushed.
If you have issues with curly hair, major bedhead, or frizzy hair I can’t recommend enough that you try wearing a silk bonnet to bed. I’ve been super impressed with wearing a silk bonnet, and was even able to preserve my curls for 7 days straight!
TIP: Avoid combing your hair or touching your hair a lot throughout the day as it straightens out your curls.
How I Touch Up My Curls
Sometimes I need to touch up the curls around my face and I found the best curling iron to do that. I am impressed with how well it works. The curling iron comes with a little glove which I don’t use. I’ve only used it twice because most days my hair does not need it, but today I woke up and I had one piece in the front that just wasn’t curly.
I like that you can adjust the temperature on this curling iron. When you turn it on, it is 380 degrees. The very first time I used it, it was too hot. Now, I turn it down to 260 degrees which is low for a curling iron, but I only need it for just a second to touch up my already curly hair.
My Curly Hair Journey
After following this hair care routine for nine months, my hair is the healthiest and the curliest it has ever been! If you’re concerned about cost, let me ease your mind. I have used the same two bottles of product since I started my curly hair journey. They really do go along way when you’re only washing your hair twice a week.
Thank you for following along on my curly hair journey! I hope that this has provided you with some great resources if you’re struggling with managing your curly hair. Our curly hair is beautiful, let’s let it shine!
