“I’m Not Artistic”: Why That Thought Is Holding You Back From Painting Door Hangers

by | Apr 7, 2026

“I could never do that.”

If you’ve ever looked at a painted door hanger on Pinterest or Instagram and had that exact thought, you’re not alone. “I’m just not artistic enough,” is one of the most common reasons women talk themselves out of trying something creative.

But here’s the truth most people don’t realize…the women creating those door hangers didn’t start out artistic either.

So…what changed?

From Feeling Stuck to Finding a Creative Outlet

Years ago, I found myself in a season that many women can relate to. My husband was deployed. I was home with two young kids. Life felt overwhelming, repetitive, and honestly a little isolating.

I didn’t have a creative outlet, and I didn’t have a strong sense of community at the time. When the house got quiet at night, my mind didn’t.

I tried scrapbooking, but it required too much time, too many supplies, and too much uninterrupted focus that I simply didn’t have. So one day, I decided to try something different.

With a simple piece of wood, a jigsaw, and a little help from my dad, I cut out a small wooden snowman and painted it.

It wasn’t perfect, but something unexpected happened while I was working on it.

For a little while, everything else faded away. The noise in my head quieted, and I felt focused and calm.

That small moment became something much bigger than I ever expected.

The Beginning of Something Bigger Than Painting

After finishing that first door hanger, I invited a few friends over to paint with me.

That was my first paint party.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that I had just discovered something that would eventually grow into a business and a community of thousands of women.

But it didn’t start with talent. It started with trying.

The Truth About Being “Artistic”

One of the biggest misconceptions about painting door hangers is that you need to be naturally artistic. You don’t.

The women who join workshops and memberships don’t come in as artists. They come in as women who are:

  • Curious but unsure
  • Interested but hesitant
  • Looking for something just for themselves
  • Willing to try, even if they’re nervous

And time after time, they surprise themselves!

Not because they suddenly became artistic overnight, but because they gave themselves the chance to learn.

You Can Do This Too, Even as a Beginner

If you’ve been searching for a creative hobby but feel intimidated, painting door hangers is one of the most approachable places to start. Why? Because…

  1. It’s simple to learn: You don’t need drawing skills or prior experience. With the right guidance, beginners can follow a clear, step-by-step process.
  2. It fits easily into your schedule: You don’t need hours of uninterrupted time. Painting can be done in small, manageable sessions that work around your schedule.
  3. It gives you a much-needed mental break: Painting helps shift your focus away from stress and onto something productive and enjoyable.
  4. It helps build confidence: There’s something powerful about completing a project and seeing what you’re capable of creating.

Progress Over Perfection

One of the most important mindset shifts in learning to paint is letting go of perfection. Your first door hanger will not be your best. That’s not a failure, it’s just a part of the process.

Every experienced painter started with something imperfect. The difference is that they kept going. Focusing on progress instead of perfection allows you to enjoy the experience while improving over time.

The Role of Community in Creative Growth

Trying something new on your own can feel intimidating. But when you’re surrounded by others who are learning alongside you, it changes everything.

In a supportive environment, it becomes easier to:

  • Ask questions
  • Make mistakes without fear
  • Stay motivated
  • Keep showing up

That sense of connection is often just as valuable as the skill itself.

If you’ve been thinking about trying to paint but keep talking yourself out of it, the Hello Sunshine Workshop is the perfect place to take that first step.

It was created specifically for beginners who feel unsure about their skills but want to learn in a supportive, step-by-step environment. Inside the workshop, you’ll be guided through the entire process so you’re never left guessing what to do next.

You don’t need experience. You don’t need to be artistic. You just need to be willing to try!
