So, you’re just getting started on your door hanger painting journey, but you have no idea WHERE to begin. Maybe you’ve found some template designs you want to try, but what do you need to bring your creative vision to life?
I’ve got you, friend! In this post, I’m showing you five essential painting tools for beginners. Stuff your craft stash with these, and let’s get started!
Painting Tools for Beginners #1: Heat Gun
A heat gun is a must! It will significantly reduce the time you spend waiting for your door hanger to dry. The one I use is the Ranger Heat It Craft Tool, and I love how quiet it is. It doesn’t blow air too hard, which means no splattered paint, and it dries each layer quickly, so you can keep going without muddying your colors.

I hang mine on a Command Hook right on the side of my craft desk so it’s always within reach when I need it!
Painting Tools for Beginners #2: Black & White Paint Pens
Paint pens are a door hanger maker’s best friend. If you’re nervous about outlining or adding lettering details with a brush, start with a set of paint pens.
I recommend starting with a set that has three different tip sizes in black and white:
- Bold Tip: For big chunky outlines
- Medium Tip: Perfect for general outlining and details
- Fine Tip: For delicate outlines and small elements
I use black for outlining and white for adding cute little doodles or highlights. My go-to brand is Posca, which you can grab below!

Painting Tools for Beginners #3: Fine Mist Spray Bottle
This one always surprises people, but it’s a game-changer! A fine mist spray bottle helps keep your paint moist and smooth, which is especially helpful when:
- Painting backgrounds
- Blending ombre effects
- Doing any shading or layering
When you spray your surface lightly with water, your paint glides on more easily and blends better. It also helps if you’re working on a porous wood surface that soaks up paint fast. I always use mine when layering white paint (which usually needs 2–3 coats), so each layer goes on smoothly without streaks.

Painting Tools for Beginners #4: A High-Quality Brush Set
Good brushes are worth investing in. They truly make such a difference when painting! And I have the perfect starter pack for you in our shop.
Each brush is labeled with “Trust the Process” (which is your daily reminder that you can do this). The set includes:
- Flat brushes
- Angle brushes
- Fan brushes (perfect for splatter effects)
- A convenient zip-up bag for travel
You can pretty much do anything with these brushes — lettering, shading, polka dots. You name it.

Painting Tools for Beginners #5: Mixed Media Pad (Your Art Journal)
Not ready to paint on wood just yet? A mixed media pad is a great way to practice and play without pressure. I use mine all the time to practice and test out:
- Lettering styles
- Color combos
- Techniques like ombre, tie-dye, polka dots, and shading
The one in our shop is perfect for following along with tutorials, trying new ideas, or just getting in some creative time when you don’t feel ready to commit to a full door hanger.

Which Tool Will You Try First?
These five tools truly made painting easier and way more fun for me — and I know they’ll help you too! Whether you’re practicing on paper or going all-in on your next door hanger, having the right tools makes all the difference.
