Why This Craft Room Sign is So Special

Some projects just make you smile every time you walk into the room. This is one of them!

It celebrates creativity with bright rainbow colors, a playful checkerboard border, confetti splatter, and layered wood pieces that give it so much personality.

One of my favorite details is the paint palette. It’s designed to look like the silicone ice cube trays — the ones I use as paint palettes in nearly every tutorial!

They’re inexpensive, reusable, and the snap-on lid keeps your paint fresh between projects. It’s one of those simple tools that quickly becomes a favorite in your craft room.

Tips for Creating a Splatter Paint Background

The colorful splatter is one of the first things people notice about this craft room sign.

If you’ve never tried splatter painting before, don’t worry. It may look random, but it’s actually one of the easiest techniques to learn, especially for beginners!

A few quick tips:

  • Thin your acrylic paint slightly with water so it flicks easily
  • Use a fan brush to create a variety of splatter sizes
  • Reload your brush often if you want larger paint drops
  • Layer one color at a time for the brightest results

Don’t worry about making every splatter perfect. The beauty of this technique is that it isn’t supposed to be perfect.

Painting Leopard Print Is Easier Than You Think

The leopard print brush cup is one of the cutest details on this project, and it’s much easier than it looks.

The secret is simple. Instead of trying to paint perfect spots, create loose, imperfect “C” shapes and broken lines that face different directions. Natural-looking leopard print is never perfectly symmetrical.

If you’re feeling nervous, practice on a scrap piece of cardboard first. You’ll be surprised how quickly you get the hang of it.

Supplies That Make Painting Easier

Having the right supplies nearby makes every project more enjoyable.

For this craft room sign, I used:

  • Acrylic paints in bright rainbow colors
  • DecoArt Spa Blue paint
  • Fan brush
  • Small round brush
  • Tiny liner brush
  • Sponge pouncer
  • Painter’s tape
  • Water mister
  • Wood glue
  • Silicone ice cube tray paint palette

These are many of the same supplies I use across Southern Adoornments tutorials, making them great additions to have on hand for nearly any project!

A Simple Trick You’ll Use Again and Again

To keep small wood letters from sliding around while painting, place painter’s tape sticky side up on your table and press each letter onto it.

This keeps your hands cleaner, helps prevent paint from getting on the edges, and makes painting tiny pieces so much easier.

Sometimes the smallest tricks save the most frustration!

Remember…It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

If you’ve painted with us before, you’ve probably noticed something. Not every project goes exactly as planned.

Sometimes your tape isn’t perfectly straight. Sometimes your glue bottle decides today is the day to break. Sometimes you make a little mistake.

And that’s more than okay!

The layers come together. The details add up. By the time your craft room sign is finished, those little imperfections usually disappear into the overall design.

That’s why I always say…trust the process!
