If you’ve never used spackle in your crafting, you’re about to fall in love. I’m talking about fast-drying, lightweight spackle. The kind you can grab at Walmart for around $5. Yes — the construction/repair material!

The texture is very similar to frosting, which makes it perfect for adding 3D details to your projects. Think icing on gingerbread cookies, fluffy snow, Santa beards, straw on scarecrows…all the fun stuff!

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to add texture to your door hangers using spackle. But don’t worry, this is beginner-friendly. If you mess up, you can wipe it off and try again!

Step #1: Using a Piping Bag With Spackle

Yes…you read that right. You can absolutely use a cake decorating piping bag and tips with spackle.

Here’s how I do it:

  • Use a piping bag and small tips from the cake decorating section or Amazon
  • Insert the coupler and tip just like you would for icing
  • Fold the top of the bag down to keep it clean
  • Load your spackle into the bag using a spatula
  • Twist the top and gently squeeze out air

Since we weren’t tinting the spackle, anything left over can be squeezed right back into the container. Nothing is wasted around here!

And the best part? You can wash the bag and reuse it multiple times. Soap and water work just fine for cleaning too.

Step #2: Choosing the Right Tip

We tested a few different tips on cardboard first. Practicing before you touch your actual project helps so much.

Round tips worked best for clean icing lines and buttons. Some of the crinkly tips didn’t behave the way I expected, and that’s okay. Crafting is about experimenting and learning as you go.

Buttons, trim, and small icing details looked adorable with simple round dots. Sometimes simple really is best!

Step #3: Palette Knife Texture (Snow, Straw, and More!)

Another fun way to use spackle is with a palette knife. Inside the Painter’s Clubhouse, we taught a scarecrow project where we mixed yellow paint into spackle and used a palette knife to create textured straw. That tutorial is still waiting for members inside the Clubhouse if you want to try it!

For this example video, we also played with spackle to create snow texture. Just spread it left to right, build it up if you want more dimension, and smooth it out. It’s incredibly forgiving and so satisfying.

This technique would be beautiful for:

  • Snowman scenes
  • Winter signs
  • Santa beards
  • Beach waves

Step #4: Sealing and Dry Time Tips

Once you’re done adding spackle, let it sit untouched for a few hours. Then, once it’s fully cured, you can seal it to give it a pretty shine.

The texture holds up beautifully over time. I’ve bumped, scratched, and stored projects with spackle, and they still look amazing!
