3 Easy Ways to Add Texture and Dimension to Your Door Hangers

by | Sep 16, 2025

Have you ever looked at a painted door hanger and wondered how to make it stand out?

The secret is texture! Today, I’m sharing three super fun techniques you can use to add texture and dimension to your projects. These are simple, beginner-friendly, and don’t require a ton of fancy supplies.

And don’t worry — you don’t have to learn them all at once. Just start out with one and work your way to the others, and before you know it, you’ll have something beautiful!

Texture Tip #1: Use Lightweight Spackle

The same stuff you use to patch holes in the wall can be used to decorate your projects! Lightweight spackle mixes beautifully with paint and can mimic all kinds of textures.

You can grab a small container of spackle at Walmart or your local hardware store, and a couple of piping bags from the cake aisle. It’s easy, budget-friendly, and so much fun — even my 10-year-old daughter can do it!

Texture Tip #2: Add Details with Writer Bottles

Remember those little bottles of puff paint we used back in the ’90s to decorate sweatshirts? Well, they’re making a comeback — but this time for door hangers!

Writer bottles let you squeeze out paint to create raised lines, dots, or textures. Once they dry, you can paint right over them for a textured look.

Practice squeezing on scrap wood to get the feel of it, and keep baby wipes handy in case you want to erase a mistake. This one doesn’t have to be perfect — it’s all about playful details!

Texture Tip #3: Bring the Bling with Resin and Beads

If you’re ready to take your projects to the next level, try adding resin with glass or beads. This technique creates shine, sparkle, and a professional finish. You can add beads and cover with resin for a glossy finish, or try something like adding foil behind beads for an extra shine.

Want to try this out? Start small! Resin can feel intimidating at first, so practice with ornaments or small accents. Always work in a well-ventilated space, and try a trusted brand like ArtResin.
