How to Use Hobby Lobby Wood Blanks For Home Decor

by | Jun 3, 2025

I recently took a little stroll through my local Hobby Lobby, and y’all…it was so stocked with the cutest wood blanks! I’ve always loved Hobby Lobby, but I just couldn’t believe the variety they had. And of course, my mind immediately started spinning with ideas using our Southern Adoornments templates.

Let’s just say, if you’re looking to turn a simple piece of wood into something beautiful, you’re in the right place.

I’m sharing my favorite finds, ideas for how to paint them, and even how to pair them with coordinating home and porch decor. Let’s dig in!

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #1: The Sea Turtle

This little guy instantly gave me all the beachy vibes! I’d love to see it finished with a foil overlay to give it a shiny, magical mermaid effect. You could also add soft ombre blues and purples to bring in that under-the-sea feel.

Whether you want to create a beach-themed door hanger or a playful piece for a kid’s room, this sea turtle has so much potential!

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #2: The Classic Circle

I know this is a simple design, but it’s really the most versatile — and Hobby Lobby has plenty of them in stock! These are a must-have in your craft stash because they go with just about everything. And the best part? You can easily trace one of our templates inside the round and customize the background to fill the space.

You can also paint it double-sided. So fun and functional!

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #3: Highland Cow Vibes

As soon as I saw the Highland cow blank, I thought of everyone’s favorite Highland cow, Lola! This one’s not exactly like our original design, but it’s close enough that you could use it — fluffy bangs and all.

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #4: Sunflower Welcome

Okay, this one might look a little intimidating at first glance — sunflowers all the way around the edges and “Welcome” across the middle — but don’t let that stop you! If you’ve followed one of our sunflower tutorials, you already have the skills to paint this.

Just break it down one flower at a time, and trust the process.

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #5: Butterfly Beauty

This had to be an easy favorite! A floral-filled background with butterflies arranged like a wreath is so beautiful! If you’re worried about all the details, here’s a tip: try painting in layers, back to front. Start with soft, subtle florals in the background and let the butterflies be your focal point at the end.

Hobby Lobby Wood Blank #6: Bumblebee Buzz

This bumblebee wood blank had the cutest honeycomb pattern with sweet little bees buzzing around. We have tons of bumblebee templates in our shop that would work beautifully as inspiration for this design!

Matching Decor Finds

One of my favorite things to do with door hangers is to coordinate them with other home or porch decorations. Hobby Lobby did not disappoint! I found so many things to match the door hanger blanks I mentioned above, especially pillows!

  • Bumblebee pillow: Pairs perfectly with that wood blank. Style them together on your front porch for a cohesive summer theme!
  • Highland cow woven wall hanging and pillow: These two are a great combination. You can use the same colors in your painted cow to tie everything together.
  • Butterfly-themed pillows: Pull colors from the pillow into your painting, and you’ll have a setup to get that boutique feel!
