This sunflower is a great beginner acrylic painting project because you get to practice several techniques without worrying about creating a realistic flower. We’re making fun art, not fine art!

Why Is Yellow Acrylic Paint So Hard to Cover With?
If you struggled to get solid coverage on your sunflower petals, you didn’t do anything wrong. Yellow acrylic paint can naturally be more transparent than darker colors. That’s why you may still see the wood or previous layer underneath after your first coat.
One of my favorite tricks is to add a little white paint to your yellow.
For our sunflower, I painted each petal yellow and, while the paint was still wet, added a little white with my brush. This helps with coverage while also creating variation in the petals.
You can also let your first coat dry and add a second coat on top. Just make sure each layer dries fully before moving on to the next one!
What Shade of Yellow Should I Use to Paint a Sunflower?
You don’t need a specific shade of yellow to paint a sunflower. I used DecoArt Cadmium Yellow in the video, but if you already have yellow acrylic paint at home, use it!
Don’t let not having the “perfect” color stop you from painting.
How Do You Add Depth to Sunflower Petals?
If you paint every petal one solid color, your sunflower can look a little flat. The good news is you don’t need advanced shading skills to change that.
For this project, we created dimension by layering several shades:
- Yellow for our main color
- White to brighten the petals
- A darker golden yellow for shadows
- A buttery yellow mixture for highlights
The trick is not blending everything until it disappears.
Let some of those brush strokes show! Those darker and lighter streaks are what give a simple painted sunflower more depth, movement, and personality.
And no, every petal does NOT need to match. Nature doesn’t work that way, and neither does whimsical painting!
What If Your Brush Strokes Don’t Look Right?
This is one of those things that gets easier the more you paint.
If you’re nervous about making those wispy lines on your sunflower petals, grab a piece of paper, cardboard, or even a scrap piece of wood first. Practice pulling the brush toward you a few times.
Pay attention to:
- How much paint is on your brush: Too much paint can create a thick, heavy line.
- How much pressure you’re using: Lighter pressure will give you a thinner, more delicate stroke.
- How quickly you move: Sometimes a confident, quick stroke actually looks better than one you slowly try to control.
You don’t need to practice for an hour. Do a few strokes, get a feel for the brush, and then go for it. You have to let yourself be a beginner before you can get better.
A Simple Trick for Better Polka Dot Spacing
Those little dots in the center of the sunflower add so much personality, but spacing polka dots can get frustrating FAST if you’re trying to eyeball perfect little rows.
Instead, think in triangles.
Make your first three dots in a triangle formation. Then continue creating little triangles as you work your way across the surface.
This gives the dots a more evenly spaced appearance without measuring every single one. And if your sponge pouncer leaves a little bubble in the paint, don’t panic. Gently blow on it or use a hair dryer to help pop the bubble.

Keep a Baby Wipe Nearby
Can I give every beginner painter one piece of advice? Keep baby wipes in your painting area!
If you make a stray mark with your detail brush or put paint somewhere you didn’t mean to, you can often wipe it away while the acrylic paint is still wet. Knowing you can fix little mistakes also makes it easier to loosen up and actually enjoy painting.
How Do You Make a Painted Sunflower Look Whimsical?
You don’t need realistic shading or perfectly shaped petals to create a cute sunflower. Actually, some of my favorite details in this project are intentionally imperfect. The squiggly black line around the sunflower center is a great example.
Not only does it add that whimsical style, but it can also disguise little imperfections where your dots or brown paint went outside the area you originally planned.
That’s something I want you to remember for future projects: Sometimes the “fix” becomes one of the cutest details:
- Add a squiggle
- Add a highlight
- Add another layer
Make it look intentional and keep going!
What Is the “Messy Middle” in Painting?
Almost every painting has a stage where you look at it and think…“Oh no. What did I do?”
It happens when you’ve added some layers and details, but everything hasn’t come together yet. Do not judge your finished project by an unfinished stage. Keep adding your layers. Add your outlines. Add those final highlights.
You might be surprised by how much those last few details change the entire project.
