How to Modify Text in Procreate to Look Hand-Lettered

by | Jan 20, 2026

Want to add a little bit of personality to your digital designs in Procreate? Or want to give your text a more hand-lettered look?

In this post, I’m showing you how to modify text in Procreate to give it a bouncy, made-it-myself look that’ll take your digital designs to the next level! This is perfect for adding a personal touch to your fonts and making your artwork feel more fun and custom. And the best part? It’s easier than you think!

I’ll be walking you through the process using one of my own summer designs. Watch the video for a full walkthrough or see the notes below.

Modifying Your Text: Let’s Start with the Basics

To begin, I used the text tool in Procreate to type out the word “sunshine” using a font I downloaded online.

Here’s the first step you don’t want to miss: you need to rasterize the text before you can make any changes to the individual letters. Rasterizing turns the text into an editable image layer — basically, it becomes part of your canvas!

Once it’s rasterized, you won’t be able to change the font anymore, so make sure you love it before you commit. After that, it’s all about getting creative and having fun!

Adjusting the Text to Look Hand-Lettered

Next, I started editing the word one letter at a time using the freehand selection tool (that’s the little ribbon icon). This lets you select individual letters and nudge them around — up, down, or even stretch them to fill in space!

I started with the S and gave it a cute little curly-Q using a monoline brush. Then I moved on to the U, N, H — each one got its own little adjustment to create that “bouncy” hand-lettered feel.

Once you get going, it’s kinda addictive!

The best part of learning how to modify text in Procreate is that it opens up so many possibilities for custom designs. You’re not stuck with a cookie-cutter font — you can make it your own.

Don’t Be Afraid to Play

I even experimented with the E at the end by trying to add a “swash” (that’s a fun, decorative flourish). I didn’t end up keeping it, but that’s OK! That’s the beauty of Procreate — you can try things, erase them, and start over without ruining anything.

If you’re nervous about drawing swashes or flourishes freehand, try Googling “swash” for inspiration and trace one until you get the hang of it. It’s all part of the process!

And remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

You Can Totally Do This!

So now you’ve got a great starting point for how to modify text in Procreate — from rasterizing your fonts to moving letters around and adding those fun, hand-drawn touches.

Whether you’re designing a door hanger template or prepping something to cut out on your laser or scroll saw, adding your own lettering flair makes it feel so much more special.
