Before you can sit down to paint a door hanger you’re going to need some supplies. If you’re a crafter, there’s a good chance you already have enough supplies on hand to get started. I’ve provided a list of supplies that I use most often. If you don’t have everything on the list, it’s totally okay! As long as you have decent paint brushes and some craft paint, you can get started!
Acrylic Craft Paint
There are many brands and types of craft paint. Depending on the store you are in, there is usually a store brand and a nationally known brand to choose from. The store brand will likely get the job done. However, you will probably have to do more coats of this paint and may struggle with the paint’s consistency. For the best experience, I recommend that you choose DecoArt Americana paint. It has a matte finish, a wide selection of colors, and the quality can’t be beat. Believe me, I have tried them all! You can find these paints at your local Michael’s and Hobby Lobby stores, or you can get started with a rainbow of colors that are in this DecoArt Americana Rainbow Paint Pack.
Paint Brushes
There are so many different brush options when it comes to painting and no one brush is the answer. It’s helpful to know what each brush is generally used for, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t experiment with which one works best for you. Check out my blog post, “Different Brush Types and What Each Type is Used For.” If you’re struggling while painting, switch brushes and try another one! Personally, I have found that I use the flat tip over and over.
More Helpful Supplies
While you really can get the job done with some paint brushes and paint, there are a few more supplies that might be helpful to have on hand. These supplies can take your door hanger to the next level. They also allow a beginner some additional help for painting their first door hanger.
